In veterinary dermatology, the casual and prolonged use of compound ear drops (containing steroids, antifungals, and antibiotics) for mild itching or as a “preventative” measure is strictly prohibited. Such practices inevitably lead to the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria. Drops should only be applied intensively for 3-5 days during acute phases presenting with erythema and pruritus.
Blind prescriptions without cytological evaluation and systemic blood tests are dangerous. If chronic otitis progresses beyond our facility’s diagnostic capabilities or safe handling limits, we promptly refer to secondary centers rather than compromising care. The end-stage of mismanaged otitis involves irreversible canal calcification, severe chronic pain, vestibular disease, and necessitates highly invasive total ear canal ablation (TECA-BO).
We urge owners not to destroy their bond with their pets by forcing painful treatments at home. Do not strive to be a “perfect nurse”; allow veterinary professionals to handle medical procedures so you can remain a comforting “family” to your pet. Please note that our clinic no longer answers phone calls during consultation hours. All medical consultations and video reviews must be conducted in person during an examination.
